Ghost Net, 2023

Ghost net, sits at the edge of the beach in Tuktoyaktuk NT, twisting and rocking in the wind. The work was assembled from driftwood, salvaged scraps of fish net, salvaged chain, a nail, and nylon sinew. It was installed in front of in front of my host Maureen Gruben‘s studio, Hunter’s B&B for 24 hours.

This was the first of the four Amauliq pieces created during my participation in the Amauliq artist’s residency in Tuktoyaktuk NT. Ghost nets is a response to a walk along the beach at the End of the Road talking about the devastating impact of drifting abandoned nets. I returned to the beach to salvage buried nets and chain. The work was installed halfway between the beach and the water. Next morning the sculpture was not just moving in the wind, but the rising tide had washed over the base, making the entire work roll as incoming waves washed over the base.

This sculpture was later re-worked for the Amauliq installation.
